DES MOINES, Iowa — Cities across the country are taking steps to show their support for those in Orlando.

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie raised a rainbow flag in front of City Hall Wednesday afternoon. A small ceremony was held as it was added to the flag pole, joining the state flag and U.S. flag, all three of which are at half-staff.

It’s a move to show the city’s support for the LGBT community and the lives lost in the shooting.

“We thought it important to add the rainbow flag to it and to show specifically we support everybody, and that community seems to be the one feeling the hurt the worst at this time,” said Cownie.

Since the tragic event, several vigils and gatherings have been held across the state and in the metro.
