An old abandoned railroad bridge near Principal Park in Des Moines was demolished Wednesday morning.

Union Pacific says the bridge hasn’t been used in about 12 years. It was left in place in hopes that the tracks would be removed and the bridge would be turned into a trail.

However, that never happened.

Removal began in 2011 and was put on hold in 2012 due to flooding. The complete demolition and cleanup should be done by the end of this year.

Union Pacific is paying for all of the removal.
