It may only be September, but it was already graduation day for one Waterloo student.

Ninety-nine-year-old Audrey Crabtree left school just before her senior year to get married and take care of her family back in 1931.

Monday night, Waterloo Schools awarded her an honorary diploma from East High School. Crabtree had told her family she always regretted not getting her diploma.

As part of the ceremony, middle school students read handwritten cards to her saying she’s an inspiration. She says it was an emotional tribute.

”I don’t feel worthy but it was really an inspiration to me and I’m having a hard time keeping my tears back,” says Crabtree.

Crabtree was also presented with a varsity letter, a homecoming pin, and an orange East High jacket.
