A 911 call for a car fire turned into a death investigation in West Des Moines this morning.

Police and fire responded to 1395 Hoak Drive just after 6 AM. When they arrived, they discovered more than just a car on fire. They found a dead body on the ground right next to the vehicle.

“It’s kind of off the beaten path a little bit. It’ s just south of 8th and I -235. It’s back off a gravel road,” says West Des Moines Police Sgt. Ken O’Brien.

Authorities say they are treating it as a crime scene, but it’s too early to rule anything in or out in their investigation.

“We’re just trying to determine the cause and manner of death, the identity of the individual and if there’s any foul play involved,” says O’Brien.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office and the DCI are assisting West Des Moines Police and Fire in the death investigation.
