Des Moines city council leaders will talk about the safety of a convenience store near East High School at their Monday night meeting.

The council will consider renewing the liquor license at the Fast Mart store, formerly known as The Oasis. The store applied for a new license last month.

Council leaders say gas stations do not need to sell liquor and are trying to stop stores from selling it. Sores like Fast Mart are allowed to sell liquor under state law.

At a meeting earlier this month, city council members voted to prohibit any new Class E liquor licenses within city limits until June 26th.

The owner of Fast Mart says he needs his liquor license to stay in business.
