On Sunday, Iowans used church service to pray for the victims and survivors of the Newtown shooting.

Parishioners at Saint Ambrose cathedral in downtown Des Moines began mass with a moment of silence.

On Friday, the bishop in Des Moines asked that all parishes say a special prayer for the families that are hurting.

During the service, father John Bertogli asked that those who lost loved ones receive understanding and comfort.

“Even in the midst of total darkness, the lord continues to bring light- precisely because of our care, our remembrance of those people in prayer and our good works 30 and whatever we can do to reach out as a community of believers to those who are hurting.”

Many of the Des Moines diocese’s 80 parishes across the state said prayers for the victims.
