Homecoming celebrations are being planned for about 100 Iowa National Guard soldiers returning from the Middle East.

The 833rd Engineer Company is based in Ottumwa. In January the soldiers were called to active duty in Afghanistan, where they cleared roads of IEDs. They conducted more than 200 route clearance missions and assisted Afghan operations to discover weapon caches in the Uruzgan province.

The unit was deployed in 2004 and 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

A welcome home ceremony is planned for this Saturday at Evans Middle School in Ottumwa. It begins at 3:00 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.
