After more two decades of selling off classic cars the Mecum Auction won’t be coming to Des Moines this summer.

Wisconsin-based Mecum has held a nationally televised two-day sale at the Iowa State Fairgrounds for the last 23 years.

The company recently announced it won’t be coming this year and they say the Iowa Office of Motor Vehicle Enforcement is to blame.

According to Mecum’s website the state started interpreting Iowa law in a way that would require all titles of vehicles at the auction to be in Mecum’s name. The auctioneer says that stipulation would create a mountain of paperwork for them, that they just don’t want to deal with.

The auction was supposed to be at the fairgrounds in July.
