DES MOINES, Iowa — Police are investigating a crash after a car smashed through a building in downtown Des Moines.

The incident happened at 221 Park Street Friday afternoon.

Police say a woman driving the car lost control and slammed through the side of the Master Builders of Iowa building.

According to police, the woman driving the car and a male passenger both suffered minor injuries. No one inside the building was injured.

Witnesses reported the car swerving and then going airborne. After the crash, several people rushed in to help.

“Next thing I know the car crashed into the building and mine and Joe’s first reaction was to get out and help. We ran down here as quick as we could. The car was smoking. We tried getting the people out as quick as possible. The driver got out on her own and me and another gentleman carried the passenger out of the passenger side,” said Des Moines resident Zach Fahey.

The Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating the crash. Police are still trying to figure out why the crash occurred.
