A northwest Iowa college student is facing charges after he detonated a homemade explosive device on campus.

Twenty-one-year-old Matthew Hanson of Villisca is charged with possession of an explosive device and reckless use of an explosive device for an incident at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.

Storm Lake police say the device was set off Monday night near a dorm, but campus security didn’t determine it was an explosive device until Tuesday afternoon. That’s when they called police.

Police determined that Hanson, who is a member of ROTC at the university, used a heating element from an MRE(Meals Ready to Eat) package to create a chemical reaction inside of a glass bottle – causing it to explode.

No one was injured in the explosion.
