The US Secretary of Education is recognizing five Iowa schools as the 2013 National Blue Ribbon schools in the nation.

Harlan Community High School, Herbert Hoover Elementary School in Bettendorf, Meeker Elementary School in Ames, Okoboji Elementary School and Taft Elementary School in Humboldt have all been chosen.

The department honors public and private schools where students perform at very high levels or made significant improvements.

“Excellence in education matters and we should honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and careers,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced Tuesday. “National Blue Ribbon schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education.”

Officials chose 236 public and 50 private schools.

The ceremony will be held on November 18th and 19th in Washington D.C.
