The sunny weather, the food and the music drew a crowd downtown for lunch hour, Friday during the second Welcome Back to Walnut event.

“I was just saying to someone earlier, they should do this every day, I mean it’s great!” one office worker remarked.

The event got under way on Walnut between 6th and 7th streets.

It’s just one of several events aimed at getting people excited about future renovations in the area.

Since the DART transit mall moved out, plans are in the works to bring business back.

Organizers are hoping to add more shopping, more food and more fun, “We are trying to show people what street life in downtown Des Moines on Walnut can be after we rebuild the street and we can put it in to full operation,” says CEO of the Downtown Community Alliance, Glenn Lyons. “So we’ve got food and entertainment down here for the office workers and as you can see, they’ve come out in droves.”

If you missed Friday’s event, there’s another one planned for September 13th.
