First District Congressman Bruce Braley says traveling to the Iwo Jima Battle site was a great way to connect with his father. Braley traveled with Veteran David Greene, a World War II Veteran from Waterloo.

The Greatest Generations Foundation, based in Denver, Colorado, organized the program so 12 American veterans could return to the Iwo Jima battlefield for the first time since the battle along. Also along was  a class of students from The Ohio State University. The students paired with each Veteran to record their memories during the visit.  Braley and US Rep. Ed Perlmutter of Denver, CO were the highest-ranking US government officials accompanying the veterans.

This March 2012 flight was the first trip back to Iwo Jima for David Greene since he fought the battle in 1945. Braley’s father, Byard Braley, was also a veteran of the Battle of Iwo Jima. The elder Braley passed away over 30 years ago.
