WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- The stakes are high in West Des Moines for hundreds of athletes from around the world.
The CAMTRI America's Championship Triathlon was held at Raccoon River Park on Saturday.
Athletes from 20 countries in North and South America swam, biked and ran in hopes of representing their country at the World Championships later this year in Mexico.
The athletes range in age from 16-23.
While they won't be trying to find a spot on the Olympic team this year, we'll likely see some of these athletes at future summer games.
They are the 2020 Olympians, they are the 2024 Olympians so what you're looking at today, if these kids hold on to the same passion you see them finish with today, they are definitely the future of the Olympic sport of triathlon," said organizer Jenny Webber.
Sunday, the Flatland Triathlon will also take place at Raccoon River Park.
The first race begins at 7 a.m.
