DES MOINES, Iowa — A playground honoring a murdered realtor is now complete. Ashley Okland was killed more than three years ago, but organizers say her memory lives on in this park and the lives she touched.
Okland was killed more than three years ago while showing a home in West Des Moines. Police have not caught her killer.
The park is Des Moines’ first all-inclusive playground which caters to kids with special needs. It’s a park Okland likely would have used while volunteering for Variety, the Children’s Charity of Iowa.
In honoring Okland’s legacy, Variety spent two years raising the needed funds for this project. With a goal of $500,000 Variety surpassed its goal putting the remaining funds towards a shelter for families near the playground.
Variety will celebrate with a ribbon cutting Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in Ewing Park at 5300 Indianola Avenue.
