AMES, Iowa--Friends of a man killed in a house fire are coming together to honor his memory.

25-year-old Sonny Wang died of smoke inhalation on March 22nd when his home caught fire. His two roommates were able to escape by jumping from a second story window but Wang never made it out.

“He was a very good guy he spent a lot of his time to help others,” says friend and colleague Larry Lan.

Lan says Wang spent his time volunteering and going on mission trips, to pay it forward Lan helped organize an event to help educate others.

“He would be honored that we`re here trying to use the story of his life and even the story of his death to help more people,” says friend Pastor Eric Warren.

Members of the Ames community met to learn about fire prevention with some help from the Ames Fire Department.

“We`re fortunate we don’t have a lot of big or fatal fires in Ames so to reinforce the importance of knowing what to do and how to protect yourself is a great opportunity for us,’ says Ames Fire Commander Scott Siberski.

Firefighters helped people learn the difference between smoke detectors, the importance of having an escape plan and why every home should have a fire extinguisher.

“Early detection for fire is the best mechanism for saving life, get out before it`s allowed to grow and then notify the fire department so we can come and take care of the emergency,” says Commander Siberski.

Lan said this is not only a good way to honor his friend but to help keep the community educated on ways to stay safe.

“We want to help others to learn something about fire safety and also we want to spread his spirit to others.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Friends of Wang say they hope to hold similar workshops in the future. They also have plans to petition the city council to name a day in honor of Wang that will promote fire awareness throughout the community.
