CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The American Red Cross is doing its part to keep Iowans safe at home.

This weekend, volunteers distributed 2500 smoke detectors to Cedar Rapids households.

The volunteers went door-to-door and installed the alarms for free. It's part of a nationwide campaign to reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries.

The Red Cross said there should be a smoke detector on every level of your home and in every bedroom.
