Police Identify Those Involved in Homicide Outside Altoona Applebee’s

ALTOONA, Iowa — Police have identified the woman killed and the suspected gunman in a homicide that happened outside an Applebee’s restaurant in Altoona Friday night.

Police got a call around 11 p.m. that a woman was shot in the parking lot of the Applebee’s located at 3741 8th St. SW in Altoona. Officers arrived and found 29-year-old Chekesha Clark dead with a gunshot wound. The suspected gunman, 30-year-old Kalen Burgess, left before officers got there.

Des Moines police attempted to contact Burgess around 1:15 a.m. Saturday. They found Burgess dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Altoona Police Department, Division of Criminal Investigation, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Des Moines Police Department, Medical Examiner’s Office and the Polk County Attorney’s Office are all investigating. The Pleasant Hill Police Department helped in the investigation.
