Monday marks the start of the 21st annual Pro Farmer Midwest Crop tour, presented by DuPont Pioneer, in which scouts offer a preliminary in-field estimate of corn yields and soybean pod counts prior to harvest.

Over 100 scouts are sampling corn and soybeans on the tour's eastern leg, from Columbus Ohio to Fishers, Indiana, and on the tour's western legs from Sioux Falls South Dakota to Grand Island, Nebraska.

In all the tour covers 7 states, including Iowa, and concludes Thursday in Minnesota, with final numbers released at 2pm Friday afternoon.

An exception this year is the late-planted crop. When the crop is mature, the in-field numbers are a little more reliable. But everything is behind this year. Despite that, Pro Farmer Editor Chip Flory says people are surprised by the results every year, whether yields are high, low, or consistent across a broad area.
