DES MOINES, — According to a family spokesperson Jamie Buelt 14 year-old Yore Jieng , shot in the head on Monday, died Saturday afternoon in the hospital.
Jieng was shot Monday evening near downtown in the intersection of 12th and Keo Way.
Police say Jieng was shot in head while he sat in a family member’s car.
This marks the Des Moines’ 11th homicide; no suspects have been arrested.
The Roosevelt High School student’s family moved to Iowa from Sudan to escape the violence, only to lose one of their own to what has been labeled a random act.
Channel 13 reporters spoke with friends and family on Thursday while Yore was fighting for his life.
“It’s a very terrible situation right now in the house, even back home in Africa. Our grandma, our grandfather, everybody in the house, back home in Sudan, they’re shocked because Yore was an innocent kid” said Yore’s Uncle, Koang Kerjiok.
His friends from Roosevelt High School remember him as an excellent basketball player whose dream it was to make it to the NBA.
“When he played for the team, he was like, unstoppable in the paint. He kept blocking people, he could shoot threes” said Albino Kahalifa.
One of his former youth pastors from the Kathedral Church remembers him for something else.
“I could look out and just see Yore smiling. I don’t know why this kid always smiled, but he was always smiling. The thing I remember about Yore is smiling” said Pastor Lucas Wolf.
The Des Moines Police Department is asking anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward.
