WEBSTER COUNTY, Iowa – One person died Tuesday morning in a crash involving a school bus near Fort Dodge.

Sgt. Nathan Ludwig with the Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened at 6:45 a.m. on Highway 7 between Harvest and Franklin Ave. That’s about two and a half miles west of Fort Dodge.

He confirmed the crash happened when a westbound vehicle crossed the center line and hit a school bus head-on. The driver of the westbound vehicle, 58-year-old Anthony Gibbins, died at the scene. The bus driver, 65-year-old David Wienhold, was transported to a Des Moines hospital by air ambulance.

The Manson Northwest Webster School District confirmed in a post on Facebook that the bus involved was one of theirs. They said Wienhold was “coherent and taken to the hospital for medical care.” The district also expressed gratitude to the first responders, “who diligently worked to provide assistance and medical care to our driver.”

The cause of the crash is under investigation but Sgt. Ludwig says weather was not a factor.
