13 Fascinating Facts About Me:

  1. I am a Husker alumna, and despite a lot of talk about Nebraska, I am from western Iowa! Because my dad grew up in Omaha, I was raised to like the Huskers. I visited both Iowa State University and Nebraska to check out their meteorology programs and ultimately felt more at home amongst the Huskers. GBR!
  2. My husband and I have two corgis, Fitz and Ollie! Fitz we got as a puppy in November 2016 and Ollie we rescued in February 2020. They have very different backgrounds but are equally intelligent and loving. Fitz knows about 17 tricks! Even though Ollie knew very little until we got him, he’s still learned 5 tricks. You can follow them on Instagram (@fitzandolliecorg).
  3. My husband and I got married here in central Iowa in June of 2019. We took our honeymoon that fall in Thailand where we explored Bangkok, Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Chiang Mai! The food, people, and scenery were incredible. We hope to go back someday! My favorite Thai dishes are Massaman Curry and Tom Kah Kai.
  4. The Des Moines Metro’s trails are one of my favorite parts of living here. Spring along the Greenbelt trail is absolutely stunning! I love to walk, run, and bike along the trails when the weather is nice!
  5. Whether I’m hanging out with friends or spending time with family that comes to town, we have SO many amazing craft breweries to choose from in central Iowa. You’ll catch me most often sipping a Gray’s Lake Nessie with Hazelnut coffee (Scottish Ale) at Confluence Brewing in Des Moines, Some Grace (Sour) at Lua Brewing in Des Moines, or a Light Lager at Kinship Brewing in Waukee!
  6. Reading is a hobby I fell in love with the moment I graduated from college. To me, there’s nothing better than taking advantage of a nice spring evening by sitting in my hammock chair and reading a book. A few of my favorites include Final Girls by Riley Sager, Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, Just Mercy by Brian Stevenson, The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes, and The Highway by C.J. Box.
  7. I find great joy in watching my plants and garden grow every spring and summer. I remember picking out flowers as a child with my parents and those traits have no doubt grown in me as an adult. I’m excited to see how my raspberries, tomatoes, and blueberries do this year!
  8. I largely cover science and sustainability stories here in central Iowa. I have also become passionate about learning and sharing my knowledge on climate change with Iowa. I highly recommend the book, Saving US: a Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World by Katherine Hayhoe.
  9. I decided I wanted to be a meteorologist when I was 11, but before I discovered my love for meteorology I had a serious love for sharks. I still do and live vicariously through other shark researchers on social media!
  10. Speaking of social media, you are welcome to reach out with weather and climate questions! You can find me on Facebook and Twitter
  11. Mental health is a topic I’ve been very open about since 2019. You can read more about my experience here: Yoga, meditation music, reading, at-home spa sessions, and playing volleyball are some of my favorite ways to decompress from the difficult days life brings.
  12. If you get stopped outside by someone telling you a storm is coming soon and you should find a place to take cover, it’s probably me! There’s something in me that can’t drive or run past a person outside without saying something if I know a storm is nearby.
  13. I didn’t drink coffee regularly until late 2021. I try to save money and prevent unnecessary waste by making my drinks at home, but I do occasionally splurge on an almond milk honey flat white from Starbucks.

Meteorologist Amber Alexander joined the Channel 13 First Alert Storm Team in December 2015. Before WHO, Amber worked at KNOP in North Platte, Nebraska where she was a meteorologist and reporter.
Amber earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology/Climatology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is a proud Husker.
Amber has always loved storms but discovered her new passion for meteorology while simply studying the material in the sixth grade. It was then that she decided she wanted to be a meteorologist.
Since she grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Amber is very happy to be back in Iowa and closer to her family. Although she is not a fan of the cold winters, Amber is excited to be in an area that has all types of weather conditions. However, she is most fascinated by severe weather. During her time at Nebraska, she loved to storm chase. She even caught her first tornado in Solomon, KS on her first ever storm chase trip with fellow students in April 2012.
Amber is looking forward to growing in her forecast abilities and providing the best weather report she can for Central Iowa.
